Risky World—Long-Term Causality: A Holistic View

Dr. Howard Qi, Assistant Professor of Finance will present on how the current economic crisis will likely have a long-term impact on everyone in our global community. There is much debate on what caused it. I will briefly review this issue from the methodological and theoretical perspective. In particular, I raise questions about the foundation of the scientific methods we are used to (especially in financial economics). From there, I extend the analysis to general risk management and decision-making areas. The presentation is not restricted to financial economics, it may also touch on how we view complex systems (such as human behaviors) and whether we can make better decisions under uncertainty. In discussing these topics, I will make some ad-hoc comparisons between western and eastern perspectives. Watch the presentation.
