Creating Sustainable Water Stewardship, A Hands-Up Approach

Mariah Maggio, Acting Program Manager for social profit organization, A Single Drop, will present on her experiences and observations of water development work in Africa. Mariah graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in Geography and was a Water/Sanitation/Solid Waste Management volunteer in the U.S. Peace Corps in the Philippines. After leaving the Philippines she was the technical coordinator and BioSand Filter trainer for the Global Women and Water Initiative’s first annual African Women and Water Conference in July 2008 for 30 women from seven African countries. Following the training she spent the next eleven months traveling between Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria monitoring the progress of the Conference participants in their implementation of skills learned and conducting additional trainings and workshops. The presentation will highlight some of the stories and challenges of water access and sanitation improvement, discuss working with diverse communities on different landscapes, and encourage discussion about sustainable development and appropriate technologies.
